The Global Day of Parents is a United Nations day that honors parents and caregivers everywhere for their commitment to their children, and calls for the practical support families need to raise them well.
About Global Day of Parents
The Global Day of Parents recognizes that families carry the main responsibility for nurturing and protecting children, and that parents do much of that work with too little help. The UN uses the day to thank parents and caregivers and to make the case for family-friendly policies such as parental leave, affordable childcare and parenting support services, which it links to reducing poverty and improving children's health and education.
The General Assembly proclaimed June 1 as the Global Day of Parents in resolution 66/292, adopted on September 17, 2012. The resolution is short: it asks member states to celebrate the day together with civil society, and in particular to involve young people and children. It built on earlier UN work on the family, which includes 1994 as the International Year of the Family and the International Day of Families on May 15.
UN agencies, especially UNICEF, set the focus each year. For 2026, UNICEF launched the day under the theme "Together for Parents" and released a short video in which caregivers from several countries describe the emotional side of becoming a parent.
The Global Day of Parents should not be confused with Parents' Day in the United States. The US day comes from a 1994 act of Congress and falls on the fourth Sunday in July. Several other countries also keep their own parents' days on dates of their choosing.
