World Milk Day recognizes milk as a global food and highlights the dairy farmers, workers and businesses that produce it. The UN Food and Agriculture Organization started it in 2001, and dairy groups in dozens of countries mark it.
About World Milk Day
World Milk Day puts the spotlight on milk and the dairy sector: its place in diets around the world, its role in rural incomes and economic development, and the work of farmers who care for dairy animals. Countries mark it in different ways, from handing out milk at schools and community events to farm open days and public campaigns.
The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) started World Milk Day in 2001. According to FAO, June 1 was picked because several countries were already holding national milk days on or around that date, and the day has since been celebrated in more than 40 countries. FAO describes milk as one of the most widely produced and valuable farm commodities in the world.
Despite its FAO origins, World Milk Day is not a formal UN international day: FAO notes that it has yet to be recognized as an official international day by the United Nations. FAO's markets and trade division collects information on national celebrations and shares it through its dairy network. In recent years the Global Dairy Platform, an industry alliance of dairy companies, associations and scientific bodies, has run the main international online campaign, with a different focus each year; for 2026 it chose to celebrate women dairy farmers.
