World Children's Day is UNICEF's yearly day of action for children's rights. It marks the anniversary of the UN's adoption of both the Declaration of the Rights of the Child and the Convention on the Rights of the Child.
About World Children's Day
World Children's Day focuses on the rights every child holds under international law: to life and good health, to an education, to play, to family life and to protection from violence. UNICEF, the UN agency for children, runs the day as a global moment of action for children and by children. Young people are invited to speak for themselves, and buildings and landmarks in many countries are lit up or painted blue in support.
The idea goes back to 1954, when the UN General Assembly adopted resolution 836 (IX). It asked every country to set up a Universal Children's Day to build friendship and understanding among children around the world and to promote their welfare, leaving each government free to pick the date and the form of the celebration. November 20 later gained two milestones: on that date in 1959 the Assembly adopted the Declaration of the Rights of the Child, and on the same date in 1989 it adopted the Convention on the Rights of the Child, which the UN describes as the most widely ratified international human rights treaty.
A familiar part of the day is the kids takeover, in which children briefly stand in for adults in prominent roles across media, government, business, sport and entertainment, using the platform to raise issues they care about. UNICEF's theme for 2026 is "My day. My rights. My future." Because the 1954 resolution left the date to each nation, many countries also keep their own national Children's Day at other times of year, such as June 1 in many countries or November 14 in India.

- Ask your school, library or city hall to light up or decorate a building in blue, the color UNICEF uses for the day.
- Donate to a reputable children's charity working on health, education or child protection, or volunteer with a local youth program.
- Write to your elected representatives about a children's issue in your area, such as child poverty, school safety or access to mental health care.
