About New Year's Day
January 1 has marked the start of the year since Roman times: the Julian calendar, which took effect in 45 BC, began the year in January, a month named for Janus, the Roman god of beginnings. In medieval Europe many places started the year on other dates, such as March 25. Over time most European countries returned to January 1, and Britain and its American colonies made it the legal start of the year in 1752, the same year they switched to the Gregorian calendar.
New Year's Day falls on January 1 every year and has been a federal holiday since 1870. When it lands on a Saturday, federal employees observe it on Friday, December 31; when it lands on a Sunday, they get Monday, January 2 off.
Celebrations begin the night before. Crowds gather in New York's Times Square to watch the ball drop at midnight, a tradition that began in 1907, and fireworks, parties and toasts mark the countdown across the country. On the day itself, many people make resolutions for the year ahead, watch the Rose Parade in Pasadena, California, and follow college football bowl games. In the South, black-eyed peas and greens are a traditional meal for luck and prosperity in the new year.
