until Pride Month begins, in your time zone
Pride Month celebrates lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer people, their history and their continuing push for equal rights. It falls in June to mark the anniversary of the 1969 Stonewall Uprising in New York City.
About Pride Month
Pride Month is a time for LGBTQ+ people and their allies to celebrate identity and community, remember people lost to violence and illness, and draw attention to rights that are still contested. Marches, festivals, film screenings and library and museum programs fill June, and many cities around the world hold their main Pride events then, though some schedule them in other months.
The timing traces back to June 28, 1969, when a police raid on the Stonewall Inn, a gay bar in New York's Greenwich Village, set off a series of protests by patrons and neighbors. The Library of Congress describes the uprising as a tipping point for the gay liberation movement in the United States. At a November 1969 conference, a group of East Coast homophile organizations voted to hold an annual march on the anniversary, and on June 28, 1970, an estimated 3,000 to 5,000 people marched in New York's first Christopher Street Liberation Day.
Presidential recognition came decades later. Bill Clinton's Proclamation 7203 named June 1999 Gay and Lesbian Pride Month, on the uprising's 30th anniversary, and Barack Obama proclaimed June 2009 Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender Pride Month. On June 24, 2016, Obama designated Stonewall National Monument, the first National Park Service site dedicated to LGBTQ history. White House recognition has varied from one administration to the next, while many states, cities, companies and other countries mark the month on their own.
