About UpcomingDays
UpcomingDays answers date questions quickly and precisely: how long until a holiday or any date, what the date will be in a few weeks, which week of the year it is, what time it is somewhere else, and how a lifetime looks in weeks. Every answer has its own page that you can bookmark, share or add to your calendar.
The site is free, needs no account, and works on phones, tablets and computers.
How we count
Your “today”
Every countdown starts from the date on your own device. Pages are prepared for US Eastern Time, and if your date is different (for example late in the evening in California, or early in the morning in Asia), the page switches to your day automatically. Numbers change at your local midnight.
What is included
Today is not counted and the target day is. A date that is tomorrow is 1 day away; on the day itself the page says so. The same rule applies to every unit:
- Weeks are whole seven-day weeks plus the days left over.
- Months are whole calendar months first (one month after January 31 is the last day of February), then the remaining days.
- Weekends count every Saturday and Sunday weekend that starts after today and on or before the target date.
- Business days are Monday to Friday. We show them with and without US federal holidays.
- Sleeps are nights, and tonight is the first one. Fortnights are 14-day periods.
Holiday dates
- US federal holidays follow federal law (5 U.S.C. 6103). When one falls on a Saturday it is observed on the Friday before; on a Sunday, on the Monday after.
- Easter and the days around it use the Gregorian (Western) church calculation.
- Jewish holidays come from the Hebrew calendar and are shown on the evening they begin, at sundown.
- Islamic dates follow the Umm al-Qura calendar. They show the expected day; local moon sightings can move them by a day.
- Chinese New Year and Diwali come from published calendars.
- Seasons start at the real equinox or solstice, dated in US Eastern Time, so spring can begin on March 19 or 20.
- Tax Day moves to the next business day when April 15 falls on a weekend or a Washington, D.C. holiday.
- School start and end dates vary by district, so we use a national midpoint and say so on the page.
Weeks, moon phases and time zones
Week numbers follow ISO 8601: weeks start on Monday, and week 1 is the week that contains the year’s first Thursday. Moon phases and equinoxes are computed with the open-source astronomy-engine library and given in UTC and in your time zone. Time-zone conversions use the IANA time zone database and handle daylight saving changes hour by hour.
Life tools
The life-expectancy estimate starts from the US Social Security period life table (2021) and adjusts it with findings from peer-reviewed studies, each cited on the page. It is a statistical average for reflection, not a prediction and not medical advice. Birth dates and answers are processed only in your browser.
