Transgender Day of Visibility celebrates transgender and nonbinary people and their contributions, and draws attention to the discrimination many of them face. It was created in 2009 as a day to focus on living members of the community.
About Transgender Day of Visibility
The day is a counterpart to Transgender Day of Remembrance in November, which mourns people killed by anti-transgender violence. Visibility Day turns the focus to the lives, achievements and everyday experiences of trans people, and to the acceptance and safety they need to live openly. It is often called the International Transgender Day of Visibility, or TDOV.
Rachel Crandall-Crocker, a psychotherapist and executive director of the nonprofit advocacy group Transgender Michigan, founded the day in 2009. She told NPR that she wanted a day focused on the living, because the only widely known trans observance at the time was a day of mourning. She chose a spring date partly to keep distance from both Transgender Day of Remembrance in November and Pride Month in June. In the first year, groups in only a handful of US cities took part, and Crandall-Crocker and her wife, Susan Crocker, kept promoting it in the years that followed.
Crandall-Crocker spread the idea largely online, encouraging people to organize their own local events, and held a panel near Detroit herself. The day has since spread well beyond Michigan and is now marked internationally, with major LGBTQ+ organizations taking part and many events centered on trans people sharing their own stories.
