About International Day Against Homophobia, Biphobia and Transphobia
IDAHOBIT is less a single campaign than a shared date that organizations, governments, schools and international agencies use for their own events, statements and education efforts. Activities range from rallies, flag raisings and film screenings to policy announcements, and the focus differs from country to country depending on local laws and conditions. The name varies too: some groups add lesbophobia, intersexphobia or acephobia, and short forms include IDAHO, IDAHOT and IDAHOTB.
May 17 marks the date in 1990 when the World Health Organization decided to remove homosexuality from its International Classification of Diseases, ending its classification as a mental disorder. The IDAHO Committee, set up in 2004, organized the first International Day Against Homophobia the following year, when communities in dozens of countries took part. French academic and activist Louis-Georges Tin, author of a dictionary of homophobia, led the effort and served as the committee's president. Transphobia and biphobia were added to the name as the day broadened.
The day has received official recognition from several governments and international institutions, including the European Parliament, and most UN agencies mark it. Since January 2023, ILGA World has coordinated global outreach, documentation and resources for the day.
