Buy Nothing Day is a 24-hour pause from shopping that invites people to question overconsumption and its effects on the planet and their own lives. It began in Canada in the early 1990s and is held as a counterpoint to Black Friday.
About Buy Nothing Day
The idea is simple: for one day, spend nothing. Supporters use the break to think about what they actually need, how advertising shapes their wants, and what mass production and waste cost the environment. Some treat it as a personal challenge, while others organize public events such as handing out flyers, cutting up credit cards or pushing empty carts through stores in silent lines.
The Independent credits the idea to Canadian artist Ted Dave and says it was then picked up by Adbusters, the Vancouver-based anti-consumerist magazine, which spread it across North America and beyond. The Independent dates the first observance to 1992. A 2000 Guardian report instead described the campaign as the brainchild of Adbusters founder Kalle Lasn and said it began in the Pacific Northwest in 1993, so accounts of the exact start differ.
In North America the day falls on the Friday after US Thanksgiving, the same day as Black Friday, one of the busiest shopping days of the year. Elsewhere, including much of Europe, it is usually held on the following Saturday, which is always the last Saturday in November. Adbusters' own 2018 campaign used the same split, giving one date for North America and the next day for everyone else.
By 2000 the Guardian reported events in about 45 countries. The same report described how major US television networks had refused to air the campaign's ads, with one network calling the message contrary to US economic policy. Critics, including business groups, argue that a one-day boycott has little effect, while supporters see it as a prompt for longer-term habits.
