System Administrator Appreciation Day, or SysAdmin Day, is a day to thank the IT staff who keep networks, servers, accounts and devices running. A working sysadmin, Ted Kekatos, started it in 2000 as a lighthearted counterpart to office appreciation days.
About System Administrator Appreciation Day
System administrators install and patch servers, manage user accounts, run backups, defend networks against security threats and answer the call when email goes down in the middle of the night. Much of that work is invisible when it goes well, which is the point of the day: coworkers stop to notice the people who keep the technology working.
The day was created by Ted Kekatos, a sysadmin at a software company. In a 2011 interview with the IT community site Spiceworks, he described it as a tongue-in-cheek offshoot of Secretary's Day, now Administrative Professionals Day. His inspiration was a Hewlett-Packard print ad for the LaserJet 4000 printer that showed grateful users lining up outside a sysadmin's cubicle with flowers and fruit baskets. He had just bought several of those printers himself, so he tore out the ad, showed it to coworkers and turned the company's July picnic into the first SysAdmin Day party.
Kekatos registered a website for the day and chose the last Friday in July because it suited an office party with cake and ice cream. He promoted it by emailing friends and the editors of computer magazines, and it spread from there through tech columns, forums and social media under the #SysAdminDay hashtag. The official site calls the 2027 observance the 28th annual, which places the first in 2000, when the last Friday of July was July 28.
The organizers are firm that the date is always the last Friday of July, celebrated all day in each person's own time zone. It has no government recognition anywhere and is a normal working day, which, as many sysadmins will point out, means somebody still has to be on call.
