Employee Appreciation Day is a reminder for managers and companies to thank the people who work for them, and to make recognition a habit rather than an afterthought. Author Bob Nelson created it with his publisher, Workman Publishing, in the mid-1990s.
About Employee Appreciation Day
The day turns the usual direction of workplace thanks around: instead of staff honoring a boss, employers and team leaders recognize the effort of their employees. Its founder has stressed that praise should happen year-round, and uses the day to point out how often good work goes unacknowledged.
Bob Nelson, a writer and consultant on employee recognition, created the day with Workman Publishing, which published his book 1,001 Ways to Reward Employees in March 1994. Nelson described its origins in a 2019 guest post on Workman's blog marking the observance's 25th anniversary, and news coverage dates the first observance to 1995. The book was later expanded and retitled 1,501 Ways to Reward Employees.
Nelson's central argument is that recognition does not have to cost much. His book collects examples ranging from no-cost gestures, such as specific praise or giving people more say in their work, to team and company-wide programs. He has also argued that some formal schemes, like rigid employee-of-the-month awards, can lose meaning over time if they are not personal or timely.
Employee Appreciation Day has no official government status and is not a public holiday. It began as a publishing promotion and spread as employers and human resources teams adopted it, mainly in the United States, with some take-up elsewhere. It sits alongside other workplace days such as Boss's Day in October and Administrative Professionals Day in April.

How to mark Employee Appreciation Day
- Thank each person on your team individually and name something specific they did, rather than sending one generic message.
- Ask employees how they prefer to be recognized: public praise, a private note, more flexibility or a new responsibility.
- Share credit upward by telling senior leaders about a team member's work by name.
- Give the team something time-based, like an early finish or a meeting-free afternoon, if your workplace allows it.
- Review your recognition programs and drop any that staff see as box-ticking.
- If you are not a manager, thank a colleague whose quiet work makes your job easier.
