The World Day against Trafficking in Persons is a UN day that raises awareness of human trafficking, the crime of exploiting people through force, fraud or coercion, and calls for better protection and support for its victims.

About World Day against Trafficking in Persons

Human trafficking means recruiting, moving or holding people through threats, force, deception or abuse of power in order to exploit them. Under the UN Trafficking in Persons Protocol, that exploitation includes sexual exploitation, forced labor, slavery or similar practices, servitude and the removal of organs. The UN Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) notes that almost every country is affected, whether as a place victims come from, pass through or are taken to.

The UN General Assembly designated July 30 as the World Day against Trafficking in Persons in resolution 68/192, adopted on December 18, 2013, to be observed every year beginning in 2014. The resolution framed the day as a way to raise awareness of victims' situation and to promote and protect their rights. The same resolution recalled the UN Global Plan of Action to Combat Trafficking in Persons, which the Assembly had adopted on July 30, 2010.

UNODC, which oversees the UN Convention against Transnational Organized Crime and its trafficking protocol, leads the observance and runs the Blue Heart Campaign, whose symbol stands for solidarity with victims. It also manages the UN Voluntary Trust Fund for Victims of Trafficking in Persons, which supports groups that help survivors.

The 2026 theme, "Trapped Behind the Scam," focused on people lured by fake job offers abroad and then forced to run online fraud operations from guarded scam compounds, a form of trafficking UNODC has tracked closely in East and South-East Asia.
