International Non-Binary People's Day raises awareness of people whose gender is not exclusively man or woman, and of the problems they face, from misgendering to missing legal recognition. It grew from a 2012 blog post proposing the date.
About International Non-Binary People's Day
Non-binary people do not identify only as a man or only as a woman. Some see themselves as both, some as somewhere in between and some as outside those categories altogether. Many also identify as transgender, though not all do. The day gives non-binary people a moment of visibility and invites everyone else to learn how to treat them with respect, from using the right name and pronouns to recognizing them in forms and policies.
The idea came from Katje van Loon, a writer from the Vancouver area of Canada. In a 2022 essay for BBC News, van Loon described writing a short blog post in 2012 calling for an International Non-Binary Day in July. The post drew little attention at first, and van Loon only realized years later that the day had caught on, observed on the exact date the post had proposed.
July 14 was chosen because it falls halfway between International Women's Day on March 8 and International Men's Day on November 19. LGBTQ+ organizations such as the Human Rights Campaign now mark the day, along with unions, universities and community groups in several countries. No government or international body has formally established it; its spread has come from grassroots and organizational support.
