Celebrate Bisexuality Day recognizes bisexual people, their history and their community, and pushes back against the erasure many bi people face from both straight and LGBTQ+ spaces. Three US bisexual activists created it in 1999.
About Celebrate Bisexuality Day
Bisexual people are often told their identity is a phase, a stepping stone or a matter of who they are dating at the moment. The day exists to make bi people visible on their own terms and to celebrate a community that has organized for decades. It is also called Bi Visibility Day or Bisexual Pride Day, and newer campaigns use the name Celebrate Bisexuality+ Day to include pansexual, fluid and other people attracted to more than one gender.
Three activists came up with the idea in 1999 while talking online: Gigi Raven Wilbur of Texas, Wendy Curry of Maine and Michael Page of Florida, as the Boston LGBTQ+ newspaper Bay Windows reported in 2003. They wanted a yearly event to celebrate bisexual identity and raise bi visibility.
According to a 2008 Long Beach Post report, the first observance took place in 1999 in Johannesburg, South Africa, during the International Lesbian and Gay Association's world conference, the first ILGA world conference held in Africa, where the bisexual pride flag flew over the event. Local groups in the US and other countries have since marked the date with parties, readings, teach-ins and picnics.
Since 2014 the day has also closed Bisexual Awareness Week, often shortened to #BiWeek, which runs from September 16 to 23. GLAAD co-founded that week with BiNet USA, and it now organizes it with the Bisexual Resource Center and Still Bisexual.
