Today Sweetest Day works much like a fall version of Valentine's Day. Couples swap cards, chocolates or flowers and go out to dinner, and some people use it to remember friends, relatives or neighbors as well. It is far better known in Ohio, Michigan and nearby states than in the rest of the country, where many people have never heard of it.

The day began in Cleveland in 1921, when a committee of about a dozen local confectioners organized the first Sweetest Day and gave away thousands of boxes of candy to newsboys, orphans, older people and the poor. A popular story credits a single kind-hearted candy company employee named Herbert Birch Kingston, but later reporting by Cleveland's Plain Dealer newspaper found that the day was set up as a promotion by the city's candy industry.

Candy makers tried to take the idea national in the 1920s and 1930s, without lasting success outside the region. Critics often call it a "Hallmark holiday" invented to sell greeting cards. The card company did not create it, though the day was commercial from the start. It has no official status, and it remains strongest in the Great Lakes area where it began.

How to mark Sweetest Day

• Give a small homemade treat or a handwritten card to someone who wouldn't expect it.
• Echo the 1921 giveaway by donating snacks or treats to a shelter, senior center or food pantry, after checking what it accepts.
• Plan an inexpensive fall date, such as a walk among the changing leaves or an afternoon at an orchard.
• Call or visit an older relative or neighbor who lives alone.
• Buy your sweets from a small local candy shop or bakery.
