Galentine's Day is an informal celebration of female friendship held the day before Valentine's Day. It began as a made-up tradition on the TV comedy Parks and Recreation, and fans, then retailers, turned it into a real one.
About Galentine's Day
Galentine's Day puts romance aside and puts friends first. Women get together for breakfast, brunch, dinner or a night in to thank the friends who support them, and many people now use it to celebrate close friendship more broadly. Because it sits right before Valentine's Day, it also gives single people and anyone tired of the couples-only focus of February 14 something of their own.
The day comes from television, not from any organization. In "Galentine's Day," the 16th episode of the second season of NBC's Parks and Recreation, the character Leslie Knope, played by Amy Poehler, describes the breakfast she holds every February 13 for the women in her life. The episode was written by Michael Schur, directed by Ken Kwapis and first aired on February 11, 2010.
Viewers started copying the idea, and it spread well beyond the show's audience. By 2017 the hashtag was trending on February 13, and large retailers and brands were selling Galentine's cards and gifts and promoting Galentine's events. It has no official status anywhere. It is a pop-culture tradition that people keep simply because they enjoy it, and there are no fixed rules about who can take part or how.
