Its origins are unclear. It appears to have taken off on social media in the mid-2010s, but there is no record of who first proposed it or why October 3 was chosen. The National Day Calendar registry lists its history as still under research, and a 2023 explainer by London's Evening Standard reached the same conclusion. It has no official status in the United States or anywhere else.

October 3 is also known online as "Mean Girls Day," after a scene in the 2004 film in which one character asks what day it is and the answer is October 3rd. Fans of the film post about it every year. Some writers have suggested that the two dates are connected, but there is no evidence that the film inspired Boyfriend Day. Like many social media holidays, it spread because people enjoyed taking part, not because any group organized it.
