Dictionary.com ties the choice of date partly to Valentine's candy going on sale the next day, and Barnes has said the name was picked partly for its ironic acronym. Similar anti-Valentine traditions probably existed before, and the origin story rests on Barnes' own account rather than independent records.
Some people use the name for February 13 or apply it jokingly to Valentine's Day itself, but February 15 is the usual date. The day is one of several celebrations aimed at single people. In Britain a separate National Singles Day is held on March 11, according to the Evening Standard. Singles' Day on November 11, which began among students in China and grew into a huge online shopping festival, is a different occasion, and so is Galentine's Day on February 13, when women celebrate their friendships.
