Mischief Night is an informal folk tradition of pranks played by young people on the eve of a holiday. In the US and much of Britain it now falls the night before Halloween, the 'trick' half of trick or treat.

About Mischief Night

Mischief Night is a custom, not an official holiday, and nobody founded it. It grew out of older European folk practices in which young people were given, or simply took, one night a year to play tricks on their neighbors: swapping garden gates, smearing door handles with treacle, ringing doorbells and running away. The name and the date have always varied from place to place.

The oldest recorded use of the term comes from England. Time magazine and The Guardian both trace it to a 1790 account from Oxford of a school play whose closing ode praised children's Mischief Night tricks. That early Mischief Night was the eve of May Day. During the 19th century, in industrial towns of northern England and the Midlands, the pranks moved to November 4, the night before Guy Fawkes Night, and many places in Yorkshire still keep that date.

In the United States, Time found that references to a pre-Halloween Mischief Night started showing up in newspapers in the 1930s and 1940s, as some people tried to separate harmless costume and candy fun from the mayhem. October 30 goes by many local names: Mischief Night is common in New Jersey and nearby states, Detroit called it Devil's Night, and parts of New England say Cabbage Night. Detroit's version turned destructive in the 1980s, with hundreds of arson fires, and in 1995 city officials launched Angels' Night, a volunteer patrol effort that helped bring the fires down.

Surveys cited by Time found that nearly three-quarters of Americans have no name for October 30 at all. Where the custom survives, police and parents usually urge that any pranks stay harmless and legal.
