Propose Day is the second day of Valentine's Week, the run-up to Valentine's Day that is popular with young people in India. It is the day to tell someone how you feel, ask them out, or propose marriage.
About Propose Day
Propose Day comes right after Rose Day and is one of eight themed days that lead up to February 14. In practice the word "propose" covers a range of gestures. For some it means a marriage proposal with a ring. For others it means confessing a crush, asking someone on a first date, or simply telling a long-term partner that they would choose them again.
No founder, company or organization is documented as having started Propose Day or the wider Valentine's Week, and no government recognizes it. It grew alongside Valentine's Day itself in India. A 2002 BBC report traced Valentine's Day's rise there to the decade after economic liberalization, when satellite channels, card shops and a new urban middle class brought the occasion into the mainstream. When the themed days were first attached to the week is not recorded, but Indian newspapers now publish the full Valentine's Week calendar each year, with Propose Day fixed on February 8.
The week is a big moment for retailers. A 2024 report in The Straits Times described young Indians spending record sums on roses, chocolates and gift hampers across the seven days, with one online gift platform reporting record rose deliveries. Valentine's celebrations in India have also drawn protests from some conservative religious and political groups, who see them as a Western import. Outside India, Propose Day is far less known, and most of the world marks only February 14 itself.
