National Wine Day is an unofficial US day for appreciating wine: how it is made, where it comes from and how it fits with food. Its origin is unclear, and wineries, shops and restaurants are the main promoters.
About National Wine Day
Wine is one of the oldest fermented drinks people make. In 2017 a team led by archaeologist Patrick McGovern of the University of Pennsylvania Museum reported in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences that residue in pottery jars from two Neolithic sites in the country of Georgia showed grape winemaking around 6000 BC, the earliest evidence found so far.
In the United States, wine regions have legal names of their own. Federal regulators recognize American Viticultural Areas, defined grape-growing regions whose names can appear on wine labels. The first, approved in 1980, was Augusta in Missouri, a reminder that American wine history reaches well beyond California.
National Wine Day itself has no documented founder, founding organization or official status, and nobody has explained why it falls on May 25. News coverage has traced mentions of the date online back to about 2009. A separate day called National Drink Wine Day falls on February 18, which adds to the confusion. Today the May date is mostly promoted by wineries, wine shops and restaurants, often with tastings.
Wine contains alcohol and is only for adults of legal drinking age, which is 21 in the United States. If you take part, keep to a glass or two with food, never drink and drive, and keep alcohol-free options on hand for guests.

How to mark National Wine Day
- Visit a winery in your own state, or look up which American Viticultural Area is nearest to where you live.
- Taste two wines made from the same grape in different regions, side by side, and note how they differ.
- Cook a dish that uses wine, such as a red wine braise or a white wine pan sauce, where most of the alcohol cooks off.
- Try a dealcoholized wine or a good sparkling grape juice if you don't drink alcohol.
- Read about how wine is made, from crushing and fermenting to aging, or take an introductory tasting class.
