National Margarita Day is an informal US celebration of the margarita, the tequila, lime and orange liqueur cocktail with roots along the US–Mexico border. Nobody has documented who started the day, and bars and restaurants keep it going.
About National Margarita Day
The margarita is usually made with tequila, an orange liqueur such as triple sec, and fresh lime juice, served over ice or blended, often in a glass with a salted rim. Its own origin is disputed. Bars and individuals on both sides of the border have claimed to invent it, and one popular story credits Dallas socialite Margarita Sames with mixing it at her Acapulco home in 1948. None of these accounts has been proven, but the drink was known in the United States by the 1950s.
A later chapter is better documented. In 1971 Dallas restaurant owner Mariano Martinez, frustrated that blenders gave inconsistent frozen margaritas, adapted a soft-serve ice cream machine to make them. The Smithsonian's National Museum of American History acquired that original machine in 2005 and presents it as part of the story of Mexican American food in the United States.
No founder, founding organization or start year for National Margarita Day has been documented, and it has no official status. February 22 was already being promoted as the day by the late 2000s, and today it is driven mostly by bars, restaurants and drink brands.
Margaritas contain alcohol and are only for adults of legal drinking age, which is 21 in the United States. If you celebrate, keep it to one drink, never drink and drive, and know that a mocktail with lime, orange and a salted rim captures much of the flavor without the alcohol.

How to mark National Margarita Day
- Learn to make a classic margarita at home with fresh-squeezed lime juice instead of a bottled mix, and taste the difference.
- Make an alcohol-free version with lime juice, orange juice, a little agave syrup and sparkling water, served in a salt-rimmed glass.
- Read about the competing stories of the margarita's invention and how the frozen version came out of a Dallas restaurant in 1971.
- Cook a Mexican or Tex-Mex meal at home, such as fish tacos or enchiladas, to go with your drink or mocktail.
- If you're going out, plan your ride home ahead of time with a sober driver, a ride share or public transit.
