National Superhero Day is an informal US day for celebrating heroes of every kind, from caped comic-book characters to the parents, teachers, nurses and firefighters who help people in real life.
About National Superhero Day
National Superhero Day has two sides. For fans it is a chance to celebrate the costumed characters of comics, cartoons and blockbuster films. For everyone else it is a reminder that heroism also shows up in ordinary places: a parent juggling two jobs, a teacher who notices a struggling student, or a firefighter, nurse or neighbor who shows up when it matters. Many people mark the day by thanking someone they consider a real-life hero.
The day is usually traced to Marvel Comics, the publisher of Spider-Man, the X-Men and the Avengers. Reports by UPI and Minnesota Public Radio's The Current in 2022 said Marvel employees started the observance in 1995. According to UPI, Marvel sent interns into the streets of central Pennsylvania to ask children which superpowers they would most like to have, and the day grew to honor real heroes alongside fictional ones. These details come from later press accounts rather than a published Marvel record of the founding.
The day has no official government status, and no organization oversees it. Although its reported origin lies with one publisher, the celebration itself is open to heroes from any comics universe, film franchise or neighborhood. That broad framing is what UPI and The Current both emphasized in 2022: the day honors fictional superheroes and real ones alike.
