National Avocado Day celebrates the avocado, a fruit native to Mexico that has become an everyday ingredient in American kitchens. A meal-delivery company created the day in 2017, timing it to the summer California avocado season.
About National Avocado Day
The avocado (Persea americana) is a native plant of the Americas. According to the California Avocado Commission, it originated in south-central Mexico sometime between 7,000 and 5,000 BC, and people cultivated it for thousands of years before it reached California. Today California grows about 90 percent of the avocados produced in the United States, mostly between Monterey and San Diego.
The variety most shoppers know is the Hass. It was found in the late 1920s and patented in 1935 by Rudolph Hass, whose original tree grew in a backyard in La Habra Heights, California. The commission notes that Hass did not overtake the older Fuerte variety as California's leading avocado until the industry expanded in the late 1970s.
National Avocado Day is a recent, commercially created observance. According to the National Day Calendar registry, Model Meals, a meal delivery company started by Camille May and Danika Brysha, founded it in 2017 and chose July 31 because it falls during California's avocado season. The day has no official government status. Restaurants and grocery chains often run promotions on the date, but the day works just as well as a reason to learn about the fruit and cook with it.

How to mark National Avocado Day
- Make guacamole from scratch with ripe avocados, lime, onion, cilantro and salt, and adjust the heat with fresh chile.
- Try avocado in a less familiar role, such as blended into a cold soup or a creamy pasta sauce, or sliced onto grilled corn.
- Practice picking avocados: a ripe one yields to gentle pressure, and a hard one will ripen on the counter in a few days.
- Look for avocados grown in California during the summer season, or buy from a local farmers market if you live where they grow.
- Plant an avocado pit in water or soil as a project with kids, knowing it will grow into a houseplant long before it ever fruits.
