A year has 52 weeks and 1 day, or 52 weeks and 2 days in a leap year. A common year has 365 days and a leap year has 366, and neither divides evenly by 7. That spare day or two is why some years have 53 ISO weeks, 53 Fridays or 27 biweekly paydays.
For most planning, “52 weeks” is close enough. It stops being close enough when you run payroll, set an annual budget by week, count down to a date or compare one year’s week 10 with the next. This guide shows the arithmetic, which weekday gets the extra day in each year from 2026 to 2030, when a year has 53 weeks, and what that means for pay and work schedules.
How many weeks in a year: the arithmetic
- Common year: 365 ÷ 7 = 52.14, so 52 weeks and 1 day.
- Leap year: 366 ÷ 7 = 52.29, so 52 weeks and 2 days.
- Average Gregorian year: 365.2425 days, because 97 of every 400 years are leap years. That works out to about 52.18 weeks.
- Average month: 365 ÷ 12 is about 30.4 days, or about 4.35 weeks. That’s why “4 weeks” and “1 month” aren’t the same thing.
- Fortnights: a common year is 26 fortnights and 1 day.
The extra day lands on the weekday the year starts on. 2026 began on a Thursday, so it has 53 Thursdays and 52 of every other weekday. A leap year gets two extra days: 2028 starts on a Saturday and ends on a Sunday, so it has 53 Saturdays and 53 Sundays.
The extra days, year by year
| Year | Days | Weeks | Weekday that occurs 53 times | Weekdays (Mon–Fri) | ISO weeks |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 2026 | 365 | 52 weeks, 1 day | Thursday | 261 | 53 |
| 2027 | 365 | 52 weeks, 1 day | Friday | 261 | 52 |
| 2028 | 366 | 52 weeks, 2 days | Saturday and Sunday | 260 | 52 |
| 2029 | 365 | 52 weeks, 1 day | Monday | 261 | 52 |
| 2030 | 365 | 52 weeks, 1 day | Tuesday | 261 | 52 |
A year has 260 weekdays only when its extra days are both weekend days, as in 2028. When the extra day is a weekday, the year has 261. A leap year whose two extra days are both weekdays has 262; 2032, which starts on a Thursday, is the next one.
Years with 53 weeks
Calendar weeks under the ISO 8601 standard run Monday to Sunday, and each week belongs to the year that contains its Thursday. So a year has 53 ISO weeks when it contains 53 Thursdays: when January 1 is a Thursday, or when a leap year starts on a Wednesday.
From 2010 to 2047, the 53-week years are 2015, 2020, 2026, 2032, 2037 and 2043. In 2026, week 53 runs from Monday, December 28, 2026 to Sunday, January 3, 2027, and 2027’s week 1 starts on Monday, January 4. Check any date on the week number calculator, or read how ISO week numbers work for the full rules and the US alternative.
Week 53 matters for anything numbered by week: retail and manufacturing calendars, sprint plans, school timetables and year-over-year reports. If your template has 52 rows, 2026 needs one more, and comparing week 1 of 2027 with week 1 of 2026 means comparing a week that started on January 4 with one that started on December 29.
Paydays: 52 or 53, 26 or 27
Because a year is a little more than 52 weeks, pay schedules that follow the week drift through the calendar and pick up an extra payday every few years.
- Weekly pay: 52 paydays in most years, 53 when the payday weekday occurs 53 times. 2027 has 53 Fridays, so a weekly Friday schedule pays 53 times in 2027.
- Biweekly pay: usually 26 paydays, sometimes 27. In 2027, a biweekly Friday schedule has 27 paydays if its first payday is Friday, January 1, 2027. 2026 has 52 Fridays.
- Semi-monthly and monthly pay: always 24 and 12, because they follow calendar dates rather than weeks.
A 27th paycheck doesn’t mean a higher annual salary. Some employers divide the salary by 26 and pay 27 times; others divide by 27 so each check is smaller. Check with your payroll team before you budget around it. Our 2027 payday calendar lists every weekly, biweekly, semi-monthly and monthly payday, and the pay periods in 2027 guide explains why 27-pay years happen.
Working weeks and weekends
A full-time schedule of five days a week is 52 weeks of work plus a day or two. In 2026 and 2027 that’s 261 weekdays. After US federal holidays observed on weekdays, 2026 has 250 working days and 2027 has 249. Most years have 52 full weekends; 2028 has 53 Saturdays and 53 Sundays.
Paid leave is often quoted in weeks. Two weeks of vacation in a five-day schedule is 10 working days, so in 2027 it leaves 239 working days, before any other leave. For a count between two dates that skips weekends and holidays, use the business days calculator.
How many weeks are left this year?
From Friday, October 2, 2026 to the end of the year there are 91 days, counting today, which is exactly 13 weeks. Of those days, 65 are weekdays. The weeks left in the year page counts down every day, and the weeks left in 2027 page does the same for next year.
If you’d rather see the whole picture, a life measured in weeks is a useful exercise: 80 years is a little over 4,170 weeks. The life in weeks chart shows yours one box per week.
