How Many Pay Periods in 2027? 26 or 27 Biweekly Paydays

By the UpcomingDays editorial team · Updated · 5 min read

Most biweekly schedules have 26 pay periods in 2027, but a schedule paid every other Friday starting Friday, January 1, 2027 has 27, because 2027 has 53 Fridays. Weekly pay on Fridays gives 53 paydays, semi-monthly pay gives 24 and monthly pay gives 12.

A 27-paycheck year isn’t a payroll error. It happens because a year is slightly longer than 52 weeks, and every so often the extra days add up to one more payday. Whether you get one in 2027 depends on which Fridays you’re paid on. This guide shows the count for each schedule, explains why 27-pay years happen, lists the months with three paychecks, and covers the holiday paydays that can change what lands on your W-2.

How many pay periods are in 2027?

Pay schedule Paydays in 2027 First and last payday
Weekly, paid on Fridays 53 Friday, January 1 – Friday, December 31
Weekly, paid on any other weekday 52 Depends on the weekday
Biweekly A: every other Friday from January 1 27 Friday, January 1 – Friday, December 31
Biweekly B: every other Friday from January 8 26 Friday, January 8 – Friday, December 24
Semi-monthly (15th and last day) 24 January 15 – December 31
Monthly 12 One per month

“Biweekly A” and “Biweekly B” are the two possible every-other-Friday schedules; every Friday-paid biweekly payroll in the country follows one or the other. Our 2027 payday calendar lists every date for both, plus weekly, semi-monthly and monthly pay. To check a schedule that isn’t on a Friday, enter your own pay date in the payday calculator.

Why some years have 27 paychecks

A common year has 365 days, which is 52 weeks and 1 day. Twenty-six biweekly periods cover only 364 days. So each year, a biweekly schedule’s first payday lands one day earlier in January than the year before, or two days earlier after a leap year. Once it would slip back past January 1, it reappears two weeks later, in mid-January, and the cycle starts again.

Eventually the first payday reaches January 1 (or January 2 in a leap year), and the year has room for a 27th payday at the end of December. 2027 starts on a Friday and has 53 Fridays, so Biweekly A, whose first payday is January 1, gets the extra one.

Schedule First payday in January 27-payday year
Biweekly A January 1, 2027; January 14, 2028; January 12, 2029 2027, then next in 2038
Biweekly B January 8, 2027; January 7, 2028; January 5, 2029 Next in 2032, when the first payday is Friday, January 2

That works out to roughly one 27-pay year every 11 years for any given biweekly schedule. Weekly pay has the same effect: Friday is the only weekday that appears 53 times in 2027.

Months with three paychecks in 2027

Most months have two biweekly paydays. Because 26 or 27 paydays don’t divide evenly into 12 months, two months a year get a third, or three months in a 27-payday year.

  • Biweekly A: January, July and December each have three paydays.
  • Biweekly B: April and October each have three paydays.

Those extra checks are useful for budgeting, since most bills come monthly. Semi-monthly and monthly pay never have a three-paycheck month.

Holiday paydays in 2027

Several Friday paydays in 2027 fall on federal holidays:

  • Friday, January 1 (Biweekly A and weekly): New Year’s Day. The Federal Reserve Banks are closed, so payroll usually moves the payday to a business day, often Thursday, December 31, 2026.
  • Friday, June 18 (Biweekly A and weekly): Juneteenth, observed. Federal offices close, but the Federal Reserve Banks are open.
  • Friday, December 24 (Biweekly B and weekly): Christmas, observed. The Federal Reserve Banks are open.
  • Friday, December 31 (Biweekly A and weekly): New Year’s Day 2028, observed. The Federal Reserve Banks are open.

The Fed’s holiday schedule keeps the Reserve Banks open on the Friday before a Saturday holiday, which is why those last three dates usually aren’t a problem for direct deposit. The 2027 bank holiday guide covers the full schedule.

Paychecks, tax years and your W-2

Pay is taxed in the year you receive it, not the year you earned it. The IRS instructions for Forms W-2 and W-3 say entries must be based on wages paid during the calendar year, and give the example of December work paid in January being reported for the new year.

That matters for Biweekly A. If the January 1, 2027 payday is moved back to Thursday, December 31, 2026, it counts as 2026 income, and your 2027 W-2 would include 26 paychecks rather than 27. If your employer pays it on a later business day in January instead, it counts in 2027. Ask payroll which way they handle it.

What a 27th paycheck means for salaried pay

If you’re paid an hourly wage, a 27th payday simply pays for the hours you worked in that period. For salaried workers, there are two ways an employer can handle it: divide the annual salary by 27 for that year, so each check is a little smaller, or keep the usual per-check amount, so the year’s total pay is higher. Which one applies is your employer’s policy, so check with payroll or compare your pay statements.

The extra payday can also affect benefits and deductions taken per paycheck, such as retirement contributions set as a fixed amount. If you contribute a fixed dollar amount each check, 27 checks means 27 contributions, so review any annual limits.

Planning with the 2027 calendar

Pay periods line up with working days only loosely: a biweekly period always has 10 weekdays, but holidays reduce the working days inside some periods. If you’re estimating hours or billing, compare your schedule with the 2027 working days count, which has 249 federal working days, and mark paydays on the printable 2027 calendar.
