Ten federal holidays are observed on a Monday or a Friday in 2027 (counting New Year’s Day 2028, observed on December 31), so 2027 has ten federal three-day weekends:

Thanksgiving on Thursday, November 25 gives a four-day weekend for anyone who also takes Friday off. Veterans Day falls on a Thursday too, so one day of leave on Friday, November 12 turns it into a four-day weekend. The end of the year is unusually generous: with Christmas and New Year’s Day both observed on Fridays, December 2027 has two long weekends in a row.

The Sunday rule is written into 5 U.S.C. 6103(b); the Saturday rule for most federal employees comes from Executive Order 11582. A few facts behind the list:
- The Uniform Monday Holiday Act of 1968 moved several holidays to Mondays from 1971. Veterans Day returned to November 11 in 1978.
- Martin Luther King Jr. Day was signed into law in 1983 and first observed in 1986.
- Juneteenth became the newest federal holiday in June 2021.
- The official name of Presidents’ Day is still Washington’s Birthday. It can never fall on February 22, Washington’s actual birthday, because the third Monday is always between the 15th and the 21st.
- Many states and cities also mark the second Monday in October as Indigenous Peoples’ Day.

Banks, markets and the Postal Service
The Postal Service closes on federal holidays, and so do most banks. On a Saturday holiday, though, federal offices and banks can differ. The Federal Reserve Banks stay open on the Friday before a Saturday holiday, so many banks do too, even though federal offices are closed. In 2027 that affects Friday, June 18, Friday, December 24 and Friday, December 31. If a payment or transfer is due near one of those days, check with your bank.
Stock markets follow their own calendar. The New York Stock Exchange and Nasdaq close on Good Friday (March 26, 2027), which isn’t a federal holiday, and stay open on Columbus Day and Veterans Day. They also usually stay open on December 31 when New Year’s Day falls on a Saturday. Check the exchange’s published holiday list before trading around these dates.
State holidays and time off
Federal holidays apply to federal employees and set the schedule for federal offices. States choose their own list. Many states close offices on the day after Thanksgiving (Friday, November 26, 2027). Massachusetts and Maine mark Patriots’ Day on the third Monday in April (April 19, 2027), and California marks Cesar Chavez Day on March 31. Private employers aren’t required by federal law to give paid time off on federal holidays, so your own days off depend on your employer’s policy or contract.
