Transitions

A 1 to 3 minute countdown for tidying up, lining up or moving between stations gives everyone the same, visible deadline — and ends the "how long do we have?" questions.

Tests and quizzes

Show the full length of the test so students can pace themselves. The color change in the last fifth of the time is a quiet signal to start checking answers.

Reading time

Set 10, 15 or 20 minutes for independent reading. The ring shows progress at a glance without anyone needing to read the clock.

Group work and discussion

Split a task into short, timed stages — a minute or two to think alone, a few minutes to talk with a partner, then share with the class.

Frequently asked questions

How do I show the timer to the whole class?

Open this page on the computer connected to the projector or board, set the minutes, press Full screen and then Start. The ring and the digits scale up to fill the screen.

Why does the ring change color?

It turns amber when a fifth of the time is left, then red at the end, so the room gets a heads-up before time runs out. The words under the ring change too (Almost done, then Time's up), so the timer doesn't rely on color alone.

Can I set more than 60 minutes?

The classroom timer goes up to an hour. For a longer exam, use the main online timer, which runs for up to 24 hours and also has a full-screen view.

Will the alarm go off if I switch tabs or lock my phone?

In a background tab on a computer, yes. The countdown is worked out from the real clock and the alarm is scheduled with the browser's sound engine when you press Start, so it stays on time. Phones often pause web pages while the screen is locked, so the sound may wait until you unlock; keep the screen on (the timer asks the browser to do that where it can) and the volume up. You can also turn on "Notify me when time's up" for a system notification. When you come back to the page, it shows the right state straight away.
