What a 2 minute timer is good for
- Brushing teeth. The American Dental Association recommends brushing for two minutes, twice a day.
- The two-minute rule. From David Allen's Getting Things Done: if a task takes less than two minutes, do it right away.
- Green tea. Green tea is often steeped for about two to three minutes; much longer can make it taste bitter.
- Rest between sets. A common rest period between sets of heavier lifts.

About this timer
The countdown runs against your device's clock from the moment you press Start, so it stays accurate in a background tab. The line under the digits shows the local time it will end. Pick one of ten alarm sounds, all generated in your browser (hear them on the countdown sounds page), and use full screen to read the time from across a room. Need a different length? Frequently asked questions
How do I set a timer for 2 minutes?
This page is already set to 2 minutes. Press Start, or the Space bar, and the countdown begins; when it reaches zero, the alarm sounds and the page shows Time's up. Pause stops the clock and Reset takes it back to 2 minutes.
How many seconds are in 2 minutes?
120 seconds, or 1/30 of an hour.
How long should kids brush their teeth?
Two minutes, twice a day — the same as adults, according to the American Dental Association. A visible countdown makes the two minutes easier to finish.
Will the alarm go off if I switch tabs?
In most desktop browsers, yes. The countdown is worked out from the real clock, and the alarm is scheduled with the browser's sound engine when you press Start, so it stays on time in a background tab. Phones can pause web pages when the screen locks, so keep the screen on — the timer asks the browser to do that where it can — and turn the volume up.
