World Tourism Day is UN Tourism's yearly observance on the social, cultural and economic value of tourism. It asks how travel can be made more sustainable and more beneficial for the communities and places that host visitors.
About World Tourism Day
World Tourism Day looks at tourism as more than leisure. Travel supports jobs and businesses, connects cultures and can help pay for the protection of natural and cultural heritage, but it can also put pressure on local communities and fragile environments. The day encourages travelers, businesses and governments to think about both sides and about how tourism can contribute to sustainable development.
UN Tourism, the UN agency for tourism formerly known as the World Tourism Organization (UNWTO), decided to create the day at the third session of its General Assembly, held in Torremolinos, Spain, in September 1979. It has been held every September 27 since 1980. The date marks the anniversary of the adoption of the organization's Statutes on September 27, 1970, which paved the way for the agency's founding five years later. UN Tourism also notes that the timing works for both hemispheres, coming as peak travel winds down in the north and picks up in the south.
Each observance has a theme. The first, in 1980, was tourism's contribution to preserving cultural heritage and to peace and mutual understanding. More recent themes have covered tourism and peacebuilding in 2024 and tourism and sustainable transformation in 2025. Tourism boards, schools, museums and travel businesses around the world hold their own events on the day.

How to mark World Tourism Day
- Visit a museum, historic site or natural area near home and learn how visitor fees or tourism help pay for its upkeep.
- Plan your next trip with local benefit in mind by choosing locally owned lodging, restaurants and guides.
- Learn the visiting rules for fragile places before you go, such as staying on marked trails and not touching coral or ancient structures.
- Try a lower-carbon option for an upcoming trip, such as taking the train instead of a short flight, where that's practical.
- If you work in tourism, share with your community how visitors support local jobs, crafts or heritage.
