World Environment Day is the UN's main day for public action on the environment. Each year the UN Environment Programme leads it around one issue, such as plastic pollution, land restoration or climate change, with a different host country.
About World Environment Day
World Environment Day aims to turn concern for the planet into action, from personal habits to national policy. The UN Environment Programme (UNEP) chooses a focus and a host country each year, and people around the world take part in cleanups, tree planting, school projects and government announcements tied to that theme. The UN describes it as the largest global platform for environmental public outreach.
The date marks the opening of the UN Conference on the Human Environment in Stockholm, held June 5 to 16, 1972, the first major UN conference on environmental issues. On December 15, 1972, the General Assembly adopted resolution 2994 (XXVII), designating June 5 as World Environment Day and urging governments and UN bodies to hold activities every year on that date. The same day it adopted resolution 2997 (XXVII), which led to the creation of UNEP. The first World Environment Day was held in 1973.
Over the decades the day has drawn attention to ozone depletion, toxic chemicals, desertification and global warming, according to the UN. Recent campaigns have focused on ending plastic pollution and on restoring degraded land and ecosystems.
