World Bicycle Day is a United Nations day that promotes the bicycle as a cheap, clean and healthy way to get around. It asks governments and communities to make cycling safer and to treat it as part of everyday transport.
About World Bicycle Day
World Bicycle Day celebrates a two-century-old machine that still solves modern problems. The UN points out that cycling gives people regular moderate exercise, produces no tailpipe emissions, eases congestion and gives people who cannot afford a car a way to reach school, work and health care. The day encourages governments to build safe cycling infrastructure and to fold the bicycle into wider plans for sustainable development.
The idea started in a classroom. Leszek Sibilski, a former member of Poland's national cycling team who later became a sociologist teaching in the United States, began writing about the bicycle's role in development in 2015 and in 2016 argued publicly that it deserved its own world day. He and his students campaigned for a UN resolution, and Turkmenistan agreed to sponsor it. On April 12, 2018, the General Assembly adopted resolution A/RES/72/272, declaring June 3 World Bicycle Day, with about 56 countries co-sponsoring the text. The first observance followed that June.
The resolution invites countries to promote cycling in education, health and transport policy, and it welcomes national and local group rides as a way to build a culture of cycling. In March 2022 the Assembly went further with resolution A/RES/76/255, which encourages countries to integrate everyday cycling into public transportation systems.
World Bicycle Day should not be confused with Bicycle Day on April 19, an unrelated date that marks a 1943 episode in the history of the drug LSD.
