Safer Internet Day is a global awareness campaign about using the internet safely, kindly and responsibly, with a special focus on children and young people. Schools, families, charities, tech companies and governments in more than 160 countries take part.
About Safer Internet Day
Safer Internet Day is about the everyday side of online life: cyberbullying, scams, privacy, misinformation, gaming, social media and, more recently, artificial intelligence. Each year organizers pick issues that young people are facing and produce lesson plans, quizzes and tips for children, parents, teachers and others who work with young people. The aim is practical skills and open conversation rather than fear.
The day began in 2004 as an initiative of the EU SafeBorders project. In 2005 it was taken up by Insafe, the European network of Safer Internet Centres, as one of its earliest actions. Today the campaign is coordinated from Brussels by the Insafe and INHOPE networks through the European Commission's Better Internet for Kids program. In 2009 the organizers introduced Safer Internet Day Committees so that countries outside Europe could join in, and the campaign now reaches more than 160 countries and territories.
Events run throughout February, with one global day of focus. The organizers now describe that day as the second Tuesday of February, though they announce each date in advance and it has not always followed that pattern: in 2024 it fell on February 6, while in 2025 it was February 11 and in 2026 February 10. The next edition is scheduled for February 9, 2027. National centers set their own themes. In the UK, for example, the UK Safer Internet Centre's theme for 2026 was the safe and responsible use of AI.
