The International Day of Women and Girls in Science is a UN observance that promotes full and equal access to science for women and girls. It recognizes their contributions and draws attention to the gender gaps that persist in STEM education and research careers.
About International Day of Women and Girls in Science
The day celebrates the work women do in science, technology, engineering and mathematics, and it looks hard at what still keeps many women and girls out of those fields. Citing UNESCO data, the UN notes that women make up less than one third of the world's researchers, and that in newer fields such as artificial intelligence only about one professional in five is a woman. Universities, research institutes, schools and UN agencies use the day for talks, lab visits, mentoring sessions and campaigns that put women scientists in the spotlight.
The UN General Assembly established the day in resolution 70/212, adopted on December 22, 2015, and it was first observed in 2016. The resolution built on earlier UN commitments. In March 2011, the Commission on the Status of Women adopted agreed conclusions on women's and girls' access to education, training, science and technology, and in December 2013 the General Assembly said that full and equal participation in science, technology and innovation is essential to gender equality and the empowerment of women and girls. UNESCO and UN Women lead the observance, working with governments, research bodies and civil society groups.
The UN ties the day to the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, arguing that gender equality supports progress across all of its goals, not just the one devoted to it. The observance falls a few weeks before International Women's Day and complements the International Day of the Girl Child in October.

How to mark International Day of Women and Girls in Science
- Invite a woman scientist, engineer or technician from your community to talk with a class, scout troop or youth club about her work.
- Learn about a pioneer such as Marie Curie, Katherine Johnson or Rosalind Franklin, and share what she discovered and the obstacles she faced.
- Encourage a girl you know to try a hands-on science, coding or engineering activity, camp or after-school club.
- Look at your own workplace or classroom: who gets speaking time, credit for ideas and lead roles on projects, and is it balanced?
- Join an edit-a-thon to improve public reference articles about women scientists whose work is poorly documented.
