National Spouses Day is an informal US day for married couples to set aside time for each other and say thank you. It is meant as a no-gift occasion, focused on attention rather than presents, and its founder is unknown.
About National Spouses Day
Unlike Valentine's Day three weeks later, this day has no cards, flowers or dinner reservations attached to it. The idea is to notice what a husband or wife does for the household and the relationship, say so plainly, and spend some unhurried time together. Coming in late January, after the holidays and before Valentine's marketing peaks, it offers a quieter moment for couples.
Nobody knows who started it. In 2016 the National Day Calendar registry, which tracks unofficial observances, said its research had not found a creator. The registry's current listing says it is still researching the origin but that the day has been observed since the mid-1980s; no earlier record has been published to confirm that. No law or proclamation sets the date, and the day has no official status. Local news coverage, such as a 2022 report from KPTM in Omaha, tends to stress the no-gifts idea.
National Spouses Day is different from Military Spouse Day, which President Ronald Reagan first proclaimed for May 23, 1984, in Proclamation 5184 to honor the husbands and wives of service members, and which later presidents have continued to proclaim each May. It is also separate from the spring and autumn days for husbands and wives individually: Husband Appreciation Day in April and Wife Appreciation Day in September.
