About National Coffee Day
National Coffee Day is a day to appreciate one of the most widely drunk beverages in the United States. It covers the whole chain behind a cup: farmers in coffee-growing countries, importers, roasters, baristas and anyone brewing a pot at home.
No founder or founding organization is documented for the September 29 date. It was already well established in US news coverage by 2010, when national outlets reported on cafes marking the day. It has no official government status. The National Coffee Association of U.S.A., the industry's main trade group, now treats it as a fixture: it times consumer research releases for the day, and in 2025 it marked National Coffee Day with a briefing on Capitol Hill held with the bipartisan Congressional Coffee Caucus.
The US date sits just before International Coffee Day on October 1. The International Coffee Organization, an intergovernmental body, says its member states agreed in March 2014 to hold a single worldwide coffee day on October 1, the date that also opens the coffee trade's year. The ICO uses its day to draw attention to the farmers whose livelihoods depend on the crop, while many countries keep their own national coffee days on other dates.
Because the two dates fall so close together, many US cafes and roasters treat the end of September and the start of October as one long coffee celebration.
