Veganuary is a yearly campaign that invites people to try eating vegan for the month of January. A UK charity of the same name runs it, offering free recipes, meal plans and nutrition tips to people who sign up.
About Veganuary
Veganuary combines 'vegan' and 'January' and asks people to try a fully plant-based diet for 31 days, at a time of year when many are already making new year's resolutions. Participants sign up online and receive daily emails with recipes, meal ideas and nutrition guidance.
The campaign was started by Jane Land and her husband Matthew Glover in York, England, with the first Veganuary in January 2014. The BBC reported in 2020 that the couple began it from their kitchen. VegNews later reported that the first campaign had about 3,000 sign-ups. The organization is now a registered charity in England and Wales, and the BBC reported that about 300,000 people signed up on its website for January 2020.
The campaign has grown well beyond Britain. VegNews reported that more than 706,000 people from almost every country signed up for January 2023, and the charity says it now runs official campaigns in 20 countries. The charity also publishes larger estimates of total participation based on surveys, which count people who tried vegan eating in January without registering; those figures are its own estimates, not sign-up counts.
Veganuary is a nonprofit campaign, not a government observance. It sits alongside the Vegan Society's World Vegan Day and World Vegan Month in November, and it shares January with Dry January, a separate alcohol-free challenge.

- Learn to cook three or four reliable vegan staples, such as a chili, a curry, a stir-fry and a hearty soup.
- Read up on nutrients that need attention on a vegan diet, such as vitamin B12, iodine and omega-3 fats, and talk to a doctor or registered dietitian before big dietary changes.
- Try a plant-based version of a dish you already love and see what works.
- Do it with a friend, roommate or coworker and swap recipes through the month.
