National Cancer Survivors Day is a yearly celebration of people living with a history of cancer, held in hundreds of communities to mark milestones, share stories and draw attention to the challenges survivors face after diagnosis and treatment.
About National Cancer Survivors Day
The National Cancer Survivors Day Foundation, a nonprofit based in Franklin, Tennessee, leads the observance and describes it as a Celebration of Life. Hospitals, cancer centers, support groups and community organizations host local events, and the foundation supplies free planning guides to local organizers. The foundation counts more than 18 million cancer survivors in the United States.
The day takes a broad view of who counts. The foundation defines a cancer survivor as anyone living with a history of cancer, from the moment of diagnosis through the rest of their life, and it invites caregivers, health professionals, family and friends to take part. Alongside the celebration, it uses the day to point to lasting problems survivors can face, including physical and emotional side effects, a higher risk of second cancers and other health problems, and serious financial strain.
The first National Cancer Survivors Day was held on June 5, 1988, according to coverage shared by the University of Colorado School of Medicine. It began in the United States and has since spread abroad: the foundation reports official events in at least 20 countries on five continents, from Canada and the United Kingdom to India, Kenya and the Philippines.
