World Stroke Day is a global awareness day, led by the World Stroke Organization, that teaches people to recognize the warning signs of stroke, act fast, and lower their risk, while calling for better stroke care and support for survivors.
About World Stroke Day
A stroke happens when the blood supply to part of the brain is blocked or a blood vessel in the brain bursts. Brain cells start to die within minutes, so fast emergency treatment can mean the difference between recovery and lasting disability. The World Stroke Organization says more than 100 million people alive today have had a stroke. Many strokes are linked to risk factors that can be managed, including high blood pressure, smoking, diabetes and physical inactivity.
The idea for the day took shape at the World Stroke Congress in Vancouver, Canada, in 2004. In 2006 the International Stroke Society and the World Stroke Federation merged to form the World Stroke Organization, a World Stroke Proclamation was adopted under the leadership of Canadian neuroscientist Vladimir Hachinski, and the new organization held the first official World Stroke Day on October 29, 2006, as summarized in a 2022 Miami-Dade County resolution recognizing the day.
The World Stroke Organization runs the campaign each year with its member societies, hospitals and stroke survivor groups, and publishes posters and other materials in many languages. Its focus for World Stroke Day 2026 is the life-saving value of knowing the signs of stroke. Common warning signs include sudden face drooping, weakness in an arm or leg, slurred or confused speech, loss of vision or balance, and a sudden severe headache.

How to mark World Stroke Day
- Learn a stroke-sign checklist used in your country, such as FAST (Face, Arms, Speech, Time), and teach it to family members, including children and older relatives.
- Save your local emergency number in your phone and make sure everyone at home knows to call it right away if stroke signs appear, rather than waiting to see if they pass.
- Get your blood pressure checked, and ask your doctor about other stroke risks such as an irregular heartbeat, diabetes or high cholesterol.
- If you smoke, ask a health professional about support to quit.
- Volunteer with or donate to a stroke survivor support group, or offer practical help to someone recovering from a stroke.
