National Burrito Day is an informal US food holiday for the burrito, a flour tortilla wrapped around a filling such as beans, rice, meat or vegetables. The dish has roots in northern and central Mexico and became an everyday meal across the American West.

About National Burrito Day

The burrito is a regional name that traveled. The earliest dictionary entry usually cited is in Félix Ramos i Duarte's Diccionario de Mejicanismos, published in Mexico in 1895. It defines a burrito, labeled as a term from the state of Guanajuato, as a rolled tortilla with meat or something else inside, the same thing people in Mexico City and Cuernavaca called a taco. Today the burrito is most closely tied to northern Mexico and to the US Southwest, where large flour tortillas are common.

In the United States, an NBC explainer published for the 2025 observance notes that burritos became a more common food after they began appearing on restaurant menus in California in the 1930s. From there they spread through the West and eventually onto fast-food menus nationwide, with cooks adding rice, beans, grilled meats and vegetables in many combinations.

No founder or founding year is documented for National Burrito Day, and it has no government status. It is kept on the first Thursday of April, a date that local news outlets report each year, often alongside restaurant promotions. Because it is tied to a weekday, the calendar date shifts between April 1 and April 7.
