International Coffee Day is a worldwide celebration of coffee led by the International Coffee Organization. It honors the drink and draws attention to the millions of farmers, many of them smallholders, whose incomes depend on growing it.
About International Coffee Day
International Coffee Day gives the global coffee trade one shared date. Many countries already had their own national coffee days scattered across the calendar, so in March 2014 the member governments of the International Coffee Organization (ICO) agreed to organize a single international day on October 1. The date also marks the start of the coffee year that the ICO uses for its statistics and reporting.
The ICO is the only intergovernmental body devoted to coffee, bringing together exporting and importing countries. It was set up in 1963 under the auspices of the United Nations, after the first International Coffee Agreement was approved in 1962, and is based in London.
The first official International Coffee Day took place on October 1, 2015, during Expo Milano 2015, alongside the first Global Coffee Forum. Daily Coffee News reported that 74 ICO member states and 26 coffee associations signed on. That first edition partnered with Oxfam on a 'Caffè Sospeso Against Poverty' campaign, inviting coffee drinkers to donate the price of an extra cup to support smallholder farmers.
Each year the ICO publishes a campaign message. For 2024 it chose collaboration across the coffee value chain, under the slogan 'Coffee, your daily ritual, our shared journey.' In the United States, National Coffee Day falls a few days earlier, on September 29.

How to mark International Coffee Day
- Taste coffees from two or three different growing countries side by side and compare how they differ.
- Look at the label on your usual bag of beans and find out which country, region or cooperative it came from.
- Try a brewing method you don't normally use, such as a pour-over, a French press or a stovetop moka pot.
- Read the ICO's material on coffee prices and farmer incomes to understand the economics behind a cup.
- Buy a coffee for a coworker or a stranger, in the spirit of the caffè sospeso idea behind the first campaign.
