How it's calculated

We go back calendar months and keep the day number. When that day doesn't exist in the earlier month (six months before August 31 is in February), the date becomes that month's last day: the same as EDATE with a negative number.

What if the day doesn't exist in that month?

The date moves to the month's last day. One month before March 31 is February 28, or February 29 in a leap year.

Why isn't it the same as 30 days per month?

Months have 28 to 31 days, so counting calendar months gives a different date than counting 30-day blocks.

How do I do this in a spreadsheet?

Use =EDATE(TODAY(), -6) for six months ago, and format the cell as a date.
