Best Days to Take Off in 2027: How to Maximize Your PTO

By the UpcomingDays editorial team · Updated · 4 min read

To maximize PTO in 2027, take off the four workdays between Christmas and New Year’s, December 27–30, which turn 4 days of leave into 10 days off. The other strong picks are the Fridays after the two Thursday holidays, November 12 and November 26, and the two weeks between Juneteenth and July 4th, where 10 days of leave give 18 days off.

The trick is to use federal holidays and weekends as free days and spend leave only on the workdays in between. This guide works out the best days to take off in 2027 using the US federal holiday calendar: the bridge days, how many days of leave each break costs, and sample plans for 5, 10 and 15 days of PTO. If your employer’s holiday list is different, adjust the counts before you book.

How to maximize PTO in 2027: the best-value breaks

Each row counts every day off in a row, including weekends and the federal holiday. “Leave used” is the number of workdays you need to take.

Take off Leave used Days off in a row
Monday, December 28 – Thursday, December 31, 2026 4 10 (December 25, 2026 – January 3, 2027)
Friday, January 15 1 4 (January 15–18, MLK Day)
Friday, February 12 1 4 (February 12–15, Presidents’ Day)
Tuesday, June 1 – Friday, June 4 4 9 (May 29 – June 6, Memorial Day)
Monday, June 21 – Friday, July 2 10 18 (June 18 – July 5, Juneteenth to July 4th)
Tuesday, July 6 – Friday, July 9 4 9 (July 3–11)
Tuesday, September 7 – Friday, September 10 4 9 (September 4–12, Labor Day)

Friday, November 12; November 15–19; November 22–24; Friday, November 26 10 18 (November 11–28)
Monday, December 27 – Thursday, December 30 4 10 (December 24, 2027 – January 2, 2028)

The first row uses days in late 2026, so it comes out of this year’s leave balance, not next year’s. Spans were counted with our date duration calculator, including both the first and last day.

Why these dates work

A break is efficient when holidays sit close to weekends. 2027 has three patterns worth knowing:

  • Thursday holidays. Veterans Day (November 11) and Thanksgiving (November 25) are both Thursdays, so one day of leave on the Friday gives a four-day weekend. That’s a 4-for-1 return, the best ratio of the year.
  • Holidays that fall on weekends. Juneteenth (Saturday, June 19), Independence Day (Sunday, July 4) and Christmas (Saturday, December 25) are observed on Friday, June 18, Monday, July 5 and Friday, December 24. Juneteenth and July 4th end up just two weeks apart, which is why the summer bridge works so well.
  • The year-end double. New Year’s Day 2028 falls on a Saturday, so federal employees get Friday, December 31, 2027 off. With Christmas observed on Friday, December 24, only four workdays separate the two holidays.

The full schedule of observed days is in the 2027 holiday calendar, and every three-day weekend is listed in our guide to long weekends in 2027.

Sample plans by leave balance

5 days of leave: five four-day weekends (20 days off).

  • Friday, January 15 (MLK weekend)
  • Friday, February 12 (Presidents’ Day weekend)
  • Friday, November 12 (Veterans Day weekend)
  • Friday, November 26 (Thanksgiving weekend)
  • Thursday, December 30 (New Year’s weekend, December 30 – January 2)

10 days of leave: four breaks (27 days off).

  • July 6–9: nine days from July 3 to July 11
  • Friday, November 12: four days from November 11 to 14
  • Friday, November 26: four days from November 25 to 28
  • December 27–30: ten days from December 24 to January 2, 2028

15 days of leave: three long breaks (32 days off).

  • Friday, February 12: four days from February 12 to 15
  • June 21 – July 2: eighteen days from June 18 to July 5
  • December 27–30: ten days from December 24 to January 2, 2028

The months that need a plan

March, April and August 2027 have no federal holidays. The longest gap of the year is the 105 days from Presidents’ Day on February 15 to Memorial Day on May 31. If your employer gives Good Friday (March 26), taking Monday, March 29 through Friday, April 2 gives ten days off, from March 26 to April 4, for five days of leave. Without Good Friday, a plain Friday or Monday off is the simplest way to break up the spring.

Use the printable 2027 calendar to mark these dates, and if a deadline sits near a break, check it with the business days calculator, which skips federal holidays.

Before you book

  • Check your employer’s holiday list. These counts use the federal calendar. Many private employers don’t close on Columbus Day or Veterans Day, and some add the day after Thanksgiving or Christmas Eve. Each difference changes how many leave days a break costs.
  • Ask early for the popular weeks. The week between Christmas and New Year’s and the week of July 4th are the ones coworkers want too, so ask as early as your employer allows.
  • Know your carryover rules. Some employers let unused leave roll over and some don’t. If you have days left at the end of 2026, the December 28–31 bridge is a good place to use them.
  • Remember pay timing. If a payday falls in your time off, check whether it moves for a holiday. Our 2027 payday calendar shows every weekly, biweekly and semi-monthly payday.

Frequently asked questions

How do you maximize PTO in 2027?

Spend leave on the workdays between holidays and weekends. In 2027 the best returns are the Fridays after Veterans Day and Thanksgiving (1 day for 4 off) and December 27–30 (4 days for 10 off).

How many days off do I need for a 10-day Christmas break in 2027?

Four: Monday, December 27 through Thursday, December 30. With Christmas observed on Friday, December 24 and New Year’s Day 2028 observed on Friday, December 31, you’re off from December 24 to January 2.

What is the longest break in 2027?

Ten days of leave from June 21 to July 2 give 18 days off, from Juneteenth (observed June 18) to July 5. The same 10 days spent in November, from Veterans Day to the Sunday after Thanksgiving, also give 18 days.

Is the day after Thanksgiving a holiday in 2027?

Not a federal one. Friday, November 26, 2027 is a regular federal workday, though many employers give it off and the stock market closes early that day.
