About Guru Nanak Jayanti
Guru Nanak Jayanti, also called Gurpurab or Prakash Purab, celebrates the birth of Guru Nanak, the founder of Sikhism and the first of the ten Sikh Gurus. He was born in 1469 in Talwandi, the town now called Nankana Sahib in Pakistan, and died at Kartarpur in 1539. He preached devotion to one God, honest work, sharing with those in need and the equality of all people, regardless of caste or gender. His hymns are part of the Guru Granth Sahib, the Sikh scripture, and his birth anniversary is among the most important days of the Sikh calendar.
Preparations start well ahead. In the weeks before, early-morning processions called prabhat pheris move through neighborhoods singing hymns. Two days before the anniversary, gurdwaras begin an Akhand Path, a continuous reading of the entire Guru Granth Sahib that lasts about 48 hours. The day before, a Nagar Kirtan procession carries the scripture through the streets, led by five men representing the Panj Pyare, with music and displays of gatka, a Sikh martial art. On the day itself, gurdwaras are lit up, kirtan continues for hours and volunteers serve langar, a free meal for anyone who comes.
Sikh tradition marks the birth on Kartik Purnima, the full moon of the month of Kartik, which places the celebration in October or November and usually in November. Some historians date the actual birth to April 1469, but the autumn observance is the one Sikhs keep. For the 550th anniversary in 2019, India and Pakistan opened the Kartarpur Corridor, giving Indian pilgrims visa-free access to the gurdwara where Guru Nanak spent his final years. The date shown follows India's central government holiday list, where the day is a closed holiday.
