About Holi

Holi is the Hindu festival that welcomes spring with color. It spans two days around the full moon of Phalguna, the final month of the Hindu lunar year. On the full-moon evening, communities gather around Holika Dahan bonfires, which retell the legend of Prahlada, a boy devoted to Vishnu. His father, the demon king Hiranyakashipu, had his sister Holika carry the boy into a fire, trusting her protective cloak to save her. In the story the cloak shielded Prahlada instead, and Holika died in the flames. The fire stands for good overcoming evil.

The following morning is the day of colors, and it is the date this countdown tracks. People of every age smear gulal, a bright powder, on friends and strangers and soak each other with water pistols and balloons. In the Braj region around Mathura and Vrindavan, the play recalls Krishna, who in popular tales colored Radha's face because he envied her fair skin. By afternoon the colors give way to baths, clean clothes, family visits and sweets such as gujiya, a fried pastry filled with sweetened milk solids.

Because Holi is set by the lunar calendar, it moves each year between late February and late March. This page uses the date on India's central government holiday list, where Holi is a closed holiday for central government offices in Delhi. Some states and almanacs place it a day earlier or later. Outside India, Holi is also a major festival in Nepal and is celebrated by Indian communities worldwide. In the United States, many temples, cities and universities now host public color events, which are often scheduled for the nearest weekend so more people can join in.
