2026 and 2027 have the same 261 weekdays, but 2027 loses one more day because the observed New Year’s Day 2028 lands in it. 2028 is a leap year that starts on a Saturday, so its two extra days beyond 52 full weeks fall on a weekend and it has only 260 weekdays; with ten weekday holidays it ends up at 250. Working days, bank days and trading days
“Working day” means different things depending on whose calendar you use, and in 2027 the three main US calendars give three different answers:
- Federal working days: 249. Federal offices close on all 12 observed weekday holidays.

- Stock market trading days: 251. The NYSE closes on 10 weekdays, including Good Friday, but trades on Columbus Day, Veterans Day and December 31.
If a contract or deadline says “business days” without defining them, the difference can move a due date by a day around those Fridays, so check which calendar applies.
Adjusting the count for your job
The 249 figure assumes you get every federal holiday off. Most people don’t work on exactly that calendar, so adjust it:
- Fewer holidays. Many private employers don’t give Columbus Day (October 11) or Veterans Day (November 11). Add one working day for each holiday you work.
- Extra company days. Subtract any extra days your employer gives, such as the day after Thanksgiving (Friday, November 26) or Good Friday (March 26).
- Observed Fridays. Some employers don’t move Saturday holidays. If you work on June 18, December 24 or December 31, add those days back.
- Your own leave. Subtract vacation and personal days. Ten days of PTO brings 249 down to 239.
For example, a job that gives every federal holiday except Columbus Day, Veterans Day and Juneteenth has 9 weekday holidays in 2027 instead of 12. If it also closes on the day after Thanksgiving, that’s 10 days off, and 261 − 10 = 251 working days before leave.
