2027 has ten federal long weekends, from New Year’s Day on Friday, January 1 to New Year’s Day 2028, observed on Friday, December 31, 2027. Veterans Day and Thanksgiving fall on Thursdays, so one day of leave on each following Friday adds two four-day weekends.
A long weekend happens when a holiday is observed on a Monday or a Friday. In 2027 the calendar is unusually kind: Juneteenth, Independence Day and Christmas all fall on a weekend, so their observed days land on a Friday or a Monday instead. Below is every three-day weekend, the best one-day additions for a four-day break, and the months with no federal holiday at all.
Long weekends 2027 at a glance
| Holiday | Day off | Long weekend |
|---|---|---|
| New Year’s Day | Friday, January 1 | Friday, January 1 – Sunday, January 3 |
| Martin Luther King Jr. Day | Monday, January 18 | Saturday, January 16 – Monday, January 18 |
| Presidents’ Day | Monday, February 15 | Saturday, February 13 – Monday, February 15 |
| Memorial Day | Monday, May 31 | Saturday, May 29 – Monday, May 31 |
| Juneteenth (observed) | Friday, June 18 | Friday, June 18 – Sunday, June 20 |
| Independence Day (observed) | Monday, July 5 | Saturday, July 3 – Monday, July 5 |
| Labor Day | Monday, September 6 | Saturday, September 4 – Monday, September 6 |
| Columbus Day | Monday, October 11 | Saturday, October 9 – Monday, October 11 |
| Christmas (observed) | Friday, December 24 | Friday, December 24 – Sunday, December 26 |
| New Year’s Day 2028 (observed) | Friday, December 31 | Friday, December 31 – Sunday, January 2, 2028 |
These are the federal observed days, which set the schedule for federal offices and the Postal Service. Your own days off depend on your employer: many private companies don’t close on Columbus Day, and some don’t give the observed Friday for a Saturday holiday. Check the full list in the 2027 holiday calendar or the guide to 2027 federal holidays.
Turn a three-day weekend into four days
One day of leave next to a holiday gives four days in a row. These are the options for each 2027 holiday:
| Holiday | Take off | Four-day weekend |
|---|---|---|
| MLK Day | Friday, January 15 | January 15–18 |
| Presidents’ Day | Friday, February 12 | February 12–15 |
| Memorial Day | Tuesday, June 1 | May 29 – June 1 |
| Juneteenth | Thursday, June 17 | June 17–20 |
| Independence Day | Friday, July 2 | July 2–5 |
| Labor Day | Tuesday, September 7 | September 4–7 |
| Columbus Day | Friday, October 8 | October 8–11 |
| Veterans Day | Friday, November 12 | November 11–14 |
| Thanksgiving | Friday, November 26 | November 25–28 |
| Christmas | Monday, December 27 | December 24–27 |
| New Year’s Day 2028 | Thursday, December 30 | December 30 – January 2 |
Many employers already give the Friday after Thanksgiving, so check before you spend a vacation day on it. The Thursday holidays are the best value of the year, because a single day of leave fills the gap to the weekend.
The four-day weekends built into 2027
- Veterans Day, Thursday, November 11. Federal offices and banks close, but many private employers stay open. If you have the day off, Friday, November 12 is the bridge.
- Thanksgiving, Thursday, November 25. The Friday after, November 26, isn’t a federal holiday, but some state governments and many private employers give it. The stock market closes early at 1:00 p.m. Eastern that day, according to the NYSE’s published calendar.
- Easter weekend. Good Friday, March 26, 2027, isn’t a federal holiday, but the stock market closes and some employers and schools give the day. Easter Sunday is March 28, so a Good Friday off makes a three-day weekend from March 26 to 28.
December 2027: two long weekends in a row
Christmas Day is a Saturday in 2027 and New Year’s Day 2028 is a Saturday too, so both are observed on Fridays: December 24 and December 31. That gives back-to-back three-day weekends. Taking the four days in between, Monday, December 27 through Thursday, December 30, turns them into ten days off, from Friday, December 24, 2027 to Sunday, January 2, 2028.
One thing to watch: on those two Fridays, federal offices close but the Federal Reserve Banks stay open, and the stock market is open on December 31. Bank branches often follow the Fed’s schedule, so payments and transfers may still go through.
Months without a federal holiday
March, April and August 2027 have no federal holidays. If you want a break in those months, you’ll need to make your own long weekend. A Friday or Monday off is the easiest way; to see which dates are open, print the 2027 calendar with week numbers. The longest gap of the year runs 105 days, from Presidents’ Day on February 15 to Memorial Day on May 31, so a spring Friday off is worth planning. Summer has a shorter gap: 63 days from July 5 to Labor Day on September 6.
How 2027 compares with 2026 and 2028
| Year | Federal three-day weekends | Why |
|---|---|---|
| 2026 | 8 | New Year’s Day is a Thursday and Veterans Day a Wednesday; Independence Day is observed on Friday, July 3 |
| 2027 | 10 | Three weekend holidays move to a Friday or Monday, and New Year’s Day 2028 is observed on December 31 |
| 2028 | 8 | July 4 is a Tuesday, and New Year’s Day 2028 was already observed in 2027 |
In 2028, Monday, July 3 is a natural bridge day before the Tuesday holiday. See the 2028 federal holidays guide for that year’s dates.
Planning tips
- Plan the summer weekends first. Memorial Day, July 4 and Labor Day are all three-day weekends in 2027, so travel plans for them are worth making early.
- Count your leave. If you want to stretch a holiday into a full week or more, see the best days to take off in 2027, which works out how many vacation days each break costs.
- Watch deadlines. A long weekend pushes back anything counted in business days. Check the date with the business days calculator.
