Bank Holidays 2027: Federal Reserve Schedule and Dates

US banks that follow the Federal Reserve schedule will close on 9 weekdays in 2027, from New Year’s Day on Friday, January 1 to Thanksgiving on Thursday, November 25. Unlike federal offices, the Federal Reserve Banks stay open on Friday, June 18, Friday, December 24 and Friday, December 31, because the holidays behind those days fall on a Saturday.

There’s no single federal “bank holiday” law; each bank sets its own hours. In practice, many US banks follow the holiday schedule of the Federal Reserve Banks, because the Fed’s FedACH service, which processes ACH payments such as direct deposits, doesn’t process them on those days. Bank holidays 2027: the Federal Reserve schedule

The dates below are from the Federal Reserve’s published holiday schedule, which already covers 2027.

That leaves 252 Federal Reserve business days in 2027: 261 weekdays minus 9 weekday closures. Federal offices have 249 working days, because they also close on the three Fridays above. For a side-by-side with every other observance, open the 2027 holiday calendar.

The Saturday rule: why banks and federal offices differ

The Fed’s schedule spells out both cases. For holidays falling on a Saturday, Federal Reserve Banks and Branches will be open the preceding Friday. For holidays falling on a Sunday, they will be closed the following Monday.

Federal employees work under a different rule. Under 5 U.S.C. 6103(b), a Saturday holiday is observed on the Friday before, so federal offices close that Friday. The result is three Fridays in 2027 when federal offices are closed but the Fed, and most banks with it, are open:

• Friday, June 18 (Juneteenth, which falls on Saturday, June 19). See the Juneteenth countdown.

• Friday, December 31 (New Year’s Day 2028, which falls on Saturday, January 1, 2028).

Days when banks close but the stock market is open

Bank holidays and market holidays aren’t the same. On Columbus Day (October 11) and Veterans Day (November 11), the Fed is closed but the NYSE trades. On Good Friday (March 26), it’s the other way around: banks are open and the stock market is closed. The NYSE also trades on Friday, December 31, 2027. Transfers, direct deposits and payments

• ACH transfers, used for direct deposits and many bill payments, don’t settle on Fed holidays. The Fed’s FedACH processing schedule for holidays is published one year at a time; for 2026, it shows processing pausing before each holiday and resuming at 5:30 p.m. ET on the holiday itself or, around some Friday holidays, on the Sunday after. • Instant payments. The Fed’s FedNow Service runs 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year, including holidays, according to the Federal Reserve. Whether you can use it depends on whether your bank offers it.

Branch hours and online banking

The Fed schedule tells you when the payment system is closed, not what your branch will do. Banks set their own branch hours, which can differ from the Fed’s schedule, so a branch may be open on a Fed holiday or close early before one. Online and mobile banking usually stay available, but a transfer you request on a holiday may not post until the next business day. If timing matters, check your bank’s own holiday notice.
