How kids’ sizes work
Children’s sizes are counted on the length of the last, like adult sizes, but on scales that start again from zero. The UK children’s scale starts at size 0, a last 4 inches long, and adds a third of an inch per size up to 13.5; the next size is adult 1. This page converts on that basis:
- UK children’s size = 3 × last length in inches − 12 (adult sizes: − 25).
- US toddler and little-kid sizes (C) = UK children’s + 0.5, the most common chart convention; some charts use + 1.
- US big-kid sizes (Y) follow men’s numbering, so 7Y is the same length as a men’s US 7 (a women’s 8.5). On this chart 13.5C and 1Y are practically the same length, and brands switch from C to Y at slightly different points.
- EU = 1.5 × last length in cm, and foot length = last length − 2/3 inch, exactly as for adults.
Checks against well-known reference points: UK children’s 0 is 4 inches of last by definition; 7Y here gives UK 6 and EU 39.5, the same as men’s US 7 on the adult chart; and the kids’ chart runs straight into the adult chart, from UK children’s 13.5 (EU 32.5) to adult 1 (EU 33) with no gap.
Stage names such as toddler, little kid and big kid are retail groupings, and shops draw the lines in slightly different places. Kids’ sizes vary more between brands than adult sizes, so measure and check the fit.
How to measure a child’s foot
- Measure late in the day, when feet are at their largest, wearing the kind of socks that will be worn with the shoes.
- Put a sheet of paper on a hard floor against a wall and have your child stand on it, weight on both feet, heel touching the wall.
- Mark the tip of the longest toe on the paper. It isn’t always the big toe; keep the pen upright.
- Measure straight from the wall to the mark, in centimeters or inches.
- Do both feet and use the longer one. Enter that length in the converter above as a foot length.
Children’s feet can grow a size in a few months, so measure again before each new pair rather than going by the last size bought.
Using a brand’s own chart
For a final answer, look up the official size chart on the brand’s own website, for the exact product line if it has one. Compare by foot length in centimeters rather than by size number: find the brand’s row for your measured foot length and read the size from there.
Size numbers don’t always mean the same length from one brand to the next. Some brands, particularly in sportswear, list EU sizes about half a size higher than generic charts like this one, and some use their own offsets between UK and US sizes. This page doesn’t guess any brand’s offsets; it shows one consistent reference chart.

Frequently asked questions
What do C and Y mean in kids’ shoe sizes?
C sizes are the US children’s scale used for toddlers and little kids, up to 13.5C. Y sizes (sometimes called youth) start again at 1Y and follow men’s numbering, so a 7Y is the same length as a men’s US 7 or a women’s 8.5.
What EU size is a US 10.5C?
On this chart a US 10.5C is a UK children’s 10 and an EU 28, for a foot about 16.9 cm long. Brands vary, so check the foot length on the brand’s chart.
When do kids move to adult sizes?
In UK sizes, children’s 13.5 is followed by adult 1. In US sizes, 13.5C is followed by 1Y, and big-kid Y sizes overlap the smaller men’s and women’s sizes, so a 5Y fits the same length as a men’s 5 or a women’s 6.5.
How much room should a child’s shoe have?
The foot lengths on this chart already allow about 1.7 cm (two-thirds of an inch) between foot and shoe length. When trying shoes on, check with your child standing that there is some space beyond the longest toe and that the heel doesn’t slip.
