World Meteorological Day marks the founding of the World Meteorological Organization and highlights how weather, climate and water services protect lives and livelihoods. Each year the UN agency picks a theme tied to a current weather or climate issue.
About World Meteorological Day
The day recognizes the work of national weather and hydrological services, the forecasters, observers and scientists who track the atmosphere, oceans and rivers. Their forecasts and warnings shape decisions about farming, flights, shipping, energy and public safety, and they give communities time to prepare for storms, floods, heat waves and droughts.
March 23 is the anniversary of the day in 1950 when the Convention establishing the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) came into force. WMO grew out of the International Meteorological Organization, a non-governmental body whose roots go back to the 1873 International Meteorological Congress in Vienna, which was set up to help countries share weather observations across borders. In 1951 WMO became a specialized agency of the United Nations, and it is now the UN's authority on weather, climate and water.
WMO has marked the day since 1961, and its published list of past themes runs from 1961 onward. Themes reflect a topical issue: the theme for 2025 was "Closing the Early Warning Gap Together" and for 2026 "Observing Today, Protecting Tomorrow", while WMO has announced "Trusted Science. Better Forecasts. Safer World." for 2027. National meteorological services around the world mark the date with open days, school programs and public talks.
